An extraordinary environment!
The Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park (Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici), one of the fourteen National Parks of the Spanish State and the only existing National Park in Catalonia , is central of a Protected Natural Space of great dimensions, excellent representation of the main ecosystems that we can discover in the Catalan high mountain . Characterized by a high mountain landscape with almost two hundred lakes , it is a paradise for hiking, mountain biking, mountaineering, mountain skiing, and other activities that are widely practiced, both privately and through companies. organizers. Proposals for environmental education are also developed. There are 4 peaks that exceed 3000 meters and a dozen that exceed 2800 .
The Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici Lake National Park (Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici) covers 105 square kilometers of high mountains, being the center of a Protected Natural Area three times as extensive. It is located between El Pallars Sobirà, La Val d’Aran and L’Alta Ribagorça . Its main feature is water: rivers, waterfalls, ponds, glacial valleys and almost two hundred mountain lakes of different shapes and colors, with great diversity of animal and plant species, given life to a unique protected natural space in southern Europe.
Among these lakes, the one of Sant Maurici stands out, a beautiful space at the foot of Els Encantats that is configured as one of the most emblematic landscapes of Catalonia. In relation to the built heritage, this is basically limited to the forest refuges , although the Romanesque churches of the Boí Valley are just on the edge of space.
The usual access to the heart of the park is through the two historical entrances: Espot (Pallars Sobirà) and Boí (Alta Ribagorça).
The Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park offers during the four seasons of the year a activity program that includes itineraries with the guide service , snowshoe excursions in the winter season, naturalist days, exhibitions, talks and competitions, activities that aim to publicize the main natural values of the Aigüestortes National Park to improve the protection and conservation of these privileged spaces.
The Casas del Parque are the main information and interpretation centers, located in Espot and Boí offering park management and administration services, permanent exhibition , temporary exhibitions, library and documentation archive, projection room, guided tours, shop, talks, conferences, courses and itineraries.
